Chalk up another unashamed victory for money grubbing lawyers and stupid teenagers. In 2007, 17-year old Daniel Petric shot both of his parents – killing his father – after they took away his copy of Halo 3. The good news is that the judge dismantled his insanity defense. The bad news is that the judge ruled there to be a serious mental defect of another nature:
And I firmly believe that Daniel Petric had no idea, at the time he hatched this plot, that if he killed his parents, they would be dead forever.
This author would like to make note that Microsoft has sold well over 8 Million copies of Halo 3. There’s no way to accurately measure the number of trade-ins and subsequent re-sales. Bottom line is that tens-of-millions of people have played (and continue to play) this game, myself included. A teenager acting out of gross negligence isn’t anything new, either.
While this story has a tragic ending, I’m dismayed to see our judicial system conclude its findings the way it has.

Maybe he thought they would be zombies like "Left 4 Dead". I guess they should not sell that game either.

No – it wasn't that kid. This kid apparently snuck out to buy a copy of Halo3 even though his parents had told him he couldn't have it. When they found it, they took it away and put it into a safe…the same safe that held the father's gun, no less. I guess the kid figured out a way to get into the safe and get both the copy of Halo and the gun.
So, the judge's statement about the kid not realizing that his parents would really be dead because that's how it is in the video game is pretty far off….he didn't get to play Halo3 before he shot his parents, so it's a crazy defense to begin with, and even worse that the judge bought into even a part of that defense.

Blame it on Eminem.
I believe he said in one of his songs that when somebody gets shot he'll get sued.

Everything would have been fine if the kid had made sure that he had switched to from the campaign lobby to multiplayer lobby before he fired the gun. Or maybe he forgot to put respawn points in the house when he was in forge mode.

I'm not sure which way I see it, the kid is 17, I'm sure he knows whats going to happen when he killed his parents. Now did it say wether the kid had any imbalances to begin with. that may be where the judge ruled the way he did.
One thing is for sure, the kids has a higher kill count than all of us now

Insane… Sane. Gimme a f'in break. This is a 17 year old kid who was with it enough to figure out how to get into the safe… there's nothing wrong with this kid.
That's the problem, everyone has an excuse ready and so many others are ready to just accept it. The game made me do it. I didn't know they'd be dead for real. I really didn't mean to shoot them when I pulled the trigger. It's there fault since they didn't just let me have the game. The feel-sorry-for-the-criminal crowd never ceases to amaze me.
Guess what? Not in my book. NO EXCUSES. He just committed a double murder. Let him fry.

Murder is murder, but in the eyes of the law ( how ever nearsighted they may be) there may have been something truely wrong mentaly with this kid. The video game excuse is a totaly F*^%ing lame A55 way for the anti fun PMRC to get their way again and blame all the things wrong in this world on music, movies, tv and video games. Thank you Tipper BORE.
Now my opinion, I don't think the "must be sane to understand the punishment should keep anyone having justice served". Eye for an eye. I like Texas, three or more credible whitnesses and you to the head of the line for the chair. I am pro capital punishment. I think public hanging should come back. Maybe if people saw what would happen to them if they killed another humen being….. nuff said.

Bi0, have you ever seen what happens when a person who is hung is left alone for a couple of days? Let's just say that the "drag effect" is pretty nasty.

Wow. Quite the response from everyone. As a gamer I'm truly saddened that things like this happen and all fingers are immediately pointed in the WRONG direction.

Nah, burning is sooooo middle ages and most people are a bit squeamish about building a public guillatine. Quick and easy is fine, you can pick the chair, the injection, bullet to the brain, or any other way for all I care. Murder is murder. Personally I think methods of execution should be somewhat close to how they killed their victims, but that could lead to some pretty sick situations that no one would carry out considering some of the murderers out there.
It's about accountability and justice. This is like someone drunk driving and killing a family then saying it wasn't my fault I can't go to jail – you chose to drink, you chose to drive, thus you are accountable for the deaths you cause, doesn't matter if you were drunk or not. Your actions are on you and you alone. In this and many other cases, they use the "the game/music/movie made me do it" excuse… sickens me. No difference. You choose to partake in drugs, alcohol, culture of violence, illegal activities and then want others to accept that you aren't responsible. A grown man gets angry and beats his toddler to death with a tire iron on the side of the road and then he's the victim?!?!?!? You do something wrong and all your fellow nutcases in society want to blame anything but you.
Sorry, call me a cold hearted bastard if you want, but that crap doesn't fly in my book. Give him a fair trial of course, but don't allow excuses and passing the buck. If he's guilty of killing them, then execute.

I agree with Smokin. If guilty, hang, fry, gas, injection, Reverse russian rullet ( Five live shells in a six chamber barrel), hell I don't care if they sit his bare ass over a fire ant nest
The fact is this we have to start making examples of people who do break the law. Punishment fits the crime.
