On January 16th 2009, electronics superstore Circuit City issued a press release gavelling another nail in the coffin of the current economy.  Beginning Saturday January 17th, the company will begin liquidating its assets in order to pay its creditors and pass quietly into the footnotes of business history.  The announcement does not come as any great suprise, However, it potentially signifies what may be the official beginning (and the first overt casualty) of the U.S. recession on a blue-collar level,  a downturn that has been flagging the economy since early 2008.

Circuit City had hoped to use the Christmas Season, and Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, to reorganize itself sufficiently to stay in business, a feat that pudits hoped would buoy concerns about a consumer level recession.  While Circuit City will not have been the first company affected, or even bankrupted, by the recession, its closing foreshadows the future of Economics and expectancy for 2009 and perhaps the next 3-7 years.

I went into a Circuit City yesterday to check out their prices.  As for now I am unimpressed.  A liquidation company is actually controlling the prices from what I understand.  Unlike Nortel who are leaving their employees with nothing, Circuit City will actually pay their employees for 60 days after Jan. 16. All Circuit City stores in Canada will remain open.  Maybe they will return when the US economy improves.

I haven't even bothered going by our local Circuit City, as that place is a BLEEP hole anyway. I'm surprised that it's taken this long. In my view, Circuit City was insolvable years ago.

Don't worry, they ran their business into the ground with poor selection, high prices, and mediocre customer service so that makes them eligible for part of our glorious government's bailout program.

Screw your business or your finances up and you too can reap the benefits of your own stupidity – just get in line, pledge blind devotion to our wonderful politicians, and you too can drink the life from smart people and good businesses.

I wouldn't be surprised.

But don't worry, someone will try to break up Best Buy now due to the anti-monopoly laws.

Hhgregg is a slight competitor for Best Buy in my area.  I don't know how many stores they have, but I hate them myself.  Wal-Mart is probably Best Buy's main competition now.

The liquidation companies sometime mark up the regprice, wait awhile and then throw out the 25% to 75% sales. when the regular price was les then the marked down price. I may go see what they have after I get my refund ( after the bill insulating the houseYell ).

Our local CC didn't have anything good going on. The selection was still OK when I checked in, but their prices were pretty high for being in liquidation. The hell with them.

And for anyone who's looking, our CC is looking to hire someone for a two-week posistion!

What sort of benefits are they offering?  Do they offer any medical?  Wink

If I was unemployed, I'd take a 2 week job.  Better than not working at all, even knowing that it's only 2 weeks.

I haven't stopped in to any of the stores and probably won't.  Guess online sources will be happy to see CC close almost as much as BB.

Not sure if I would take the job for two weeks. I could probably collect more than what I make there

I stopped in a Circuit City and notice they have games 40% off.  They didn't have much of a selection left but I did notice Star Wars: Force Unleashed, & Fable 2.  At 40% off those games would run $36.00.  Are any of those worth the purchase?

Can't speak for Force Unleashed but Fable 2 is a great game and a ton of fun to play.

I picked up Fable 2 today.  The rep at Circuit City said he was shocked they still had copies of the game.  I wasn't surprised considering that title was the only one that was locked up and you had to ask for someone to get it for you.  I didn't know you could play co-op.  Smokin, You and Tequila need to join me to boost my EXP quicker.  Wink  Up till this week the store was fairly full, but now many shelves are getting bare.  By the way they are selling the shelves and light fixtures as well.  I guess anything for a buck.  For some reason they are not getting rid of their TV's.

As for Fable 2 co-op, it's very overrated and practically useless.  Single player is well worth it but who ever joins the game is basically shafted to riding the hump in the family station wagon.  Laugh

Oh, once you get good in the game, finish the shooting gallery test and get the hero doll.  It's one of the hardest achiements to get bacause there are 6 and you can only get 1 type in your game, so we've got to trade them around.  Problem is, it's darn hard to win the damn prize.

Not surprised they aren't selling the TV's though… the employees already have dibs on them since they know they won't be getting their last couple of paychecks..

The way I understood Co-op is that you would use a henchmam instead of your own character, but you would still get the exp., gold, etc. ?  Confused  Not true?

The host sets the distribution of the money and experience, so you can get some from playing co-op, but less than playing alone.  The most frustrating part is how the game forces the two characters to stay on the same screen (like the Lego games), and it limits camera control significantly.  It's fun to do in-person, and my son loves playing that way, but over Live it just feels wrong.

There are a few achievements that require the co-op, though, so you'll have to do it at some point.  You just shouldn't expect to want to go back to it afterward.

Do I have it right?

Close, Prime. Actually Circuit City closing = Fable 2 topic being more interesting than the closing itself. Wink

I admit I noticed I am guilty of quite a bit of threadjacking lately. Sorry. Embarassed

Anyway, back to Fable strategy : Laugh

Smokin or Tequila, I have only eaten 1 pie, about 3 or 4 meats, 2 or 3 alcoholic beverages and my character is getting fat!?!?!  What the . . . Are you  not supposed to eat?  I read somewhere to eat Tofu, but 1 pie is overdoing it ?!  Is there any way to thin him out?

Tip: You may have noticed already that one benefit of co-op is receiving all of your henchman's experience, and receieving it for your own character.  Yeah . . .  it's cheating, but I leveled up quick.

Yep, one good meat pie plus a beer equals obesity.  I think they use the BMI scale to determine overweight and obese in the game (which means that skin and bones is healthy, one pound over that is overweight, and two pounds over that is obese).

If you buy the knothole island DLC, you can go there and buy get-skinny potions (or get-fat potions, if you like being fat).  Otherwise, eat tofu and celery until you get skinny again.  Isn't it fun?

It's like destiny.  I can't avoid packing on a few more pounds than I want in the real world, and can't avoid them in the game either. Cry  I'm going on a tofu diet!! . . . . in the game, not the real world that is. Wink

Just remember when you are done playing co-op with your kids to sell off all their abilities as general experience so your character can claim it when their henchmen sign out.
